I felt really connected to Riv and Bleda but I had SUCH a hard time connecting to Drem because of the way his story was told.

I don’t necessarily consider it an improvement because I loved both styles: I loved following many characters and seeing things fall into place in the first series but I also loved the quicker pacing and easiness to follow in this series! On our site, you can find not only book reviews but author interviews, cover reveals, excerpts from books, acquisition announcements, guest posts by your favourite authors, and so much more. But their dominion is brutally enforced and their ancient enemy may not be as crushed as they thought. The story places readers within the Land of the Faithful approximately 120 years after the conclusion of the novel Wrath, which was an epic, brutal, and fulfilling climax to one of my favourite ever fantasy series'. As many a fantasy lover will know, world-building is the lifeblood of fantasy’s storytelling and in this case it is a resounding success, largely thanks to the groundwork the author has laid in tFatF and subsequently built on in AToD. He has a lot of insight into how the Ben-Elim politics work and how they use fear and their strength to almost hold every human tribe in servitude to them. Nwxt we follow Riv, and warrior at Drassil training to join the Ben-Elims warband until she discovers a deadly secret that will change everything, not only for the Ben-Elim but the entire banished lands. The book starts off a little slow, but then soon after I became completely immersed in this brilliant and brutal world that the author created.

The main characters from the first series are long dead with only their legacies, both their legend and their descendants, remaining. Adult – Many different definitions are thrown around, but I define this as books that contain content not suitable for younger readers. A Time of Dread marked the fifth time his work has been included in my ‘favorites of all time’ shelves; together with his previous quartet, that’s five out of five books. They are using these forces to attack in the hopes that they can free their dark lord Asroth from his entombment.

It is, on some level, a book that treats the reader gently, even as it carries them through scenes both tragic and triumphant. The book reignites all the sparks that made the previous book excel in quality; betrayal, familial love, the friendship between humans and animals, wars, deception, a few hilarious interactions, and many more.

Whether it’s in the form of their descendants or, in one case, as one of the main POV, I found all the protagonists endearing and the villains despicable. This sequel leaps straight into the action, and begins directly after the climax of the first book, A Time of Dread. Also, for those of you who had trouble with the myriad amount of characters in TFatF, A Time of Dread casts are smaller in quantity, with only four main POV to follow throughout the entire book; Drem, Riv, Bleda, and one side character from the previous series. I like my morally grey characters as much as the next person but it is sometimes nice to have things simpler. They give us elite fighting units, rampaging giant-carrying war bears, masters of horse riding and archery and so much more epic stuff. Finally, Ben Elim and humans are starting to mix on more fronts than just the battlefield, with years of living together resulting in some forbidden romances.

I am the author of epic fantasy series The Faithful and the Fallen, Of Blood and Bone and The Bloodsworn Saga. From the first book of Malice through to this gem, it is hard to believe that John's skill at writing has become stronger and even more fluid.
