There is still regular transatlantic service (which will cost you), but trans-Pacific services are virtually non-existent and require probably the biggest amount of advance planning. They're briefly greeted by the golden barge belonging to King Phumiphon, who lent it, with crew, for the production. Passepartout informs Fogg of his mistake and Fogg hurries to the Club just in time to meet his deadline and win the wager. While balloons were well known in 1872, and Jules Verne described them in other books, the original novel lets Fogg dismiss balloons as useless for travel. If you didn’t fancy the lunch special, they also have a traditional menu serving up pub favourites as well.

Flightfox created a trip, "Around the World in 80 Hours", to see if flight experts could find cheap flights following the same path as described in the book. Around the World in Eighty Days marks the first in a new series of shows developed by the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) that takes a novel, a short story or other written narrative as a point of departure. For Kolkata to Hong Kong, the travellers catch a steamer going to Hong Kong across the South China Sea which takes 13 days.

The fabulously wealthy Victorian gentleman Phileas Fogg wagers his life's fortune that he can circumnavigate the globe in just 80 days. Such places include Egypt, Yemen, India, Singapore, Hong Kong and Ireland, with Shanghai also home to a British concession at that time.

Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter felt the plot did not justify eight episodes, but praised Tennant's performance. The final leg of the sea journey from 'New York' to 'Liverpool', with the Henrietta slowly dismantled to feed its own furnace, was filmed offshore at Newport Beach, just south of Los Angeles. It's nearby, at the junction of Pelham Crescent and Pelham Place, that Passepartout sees the newspaper vendor and realises that it's still Saturday and all is not lost. Around the World in Eighty Days was first published as a serial from October to December 1872, causing some readers to believe that the journey took place in real life.Fogg’s Tavern is a lively and eccentric Victorian bar in central London that is inspired by Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days. The tavern has lots to offer including traditional pub food, exclusive cocktails, and even a weekly Cockney singalong. They also ventured to Badwater Basin (the lowest point in North America), woke up to the sunrise over Death Valley’s Mesquite Sand Dunes and culminated their journey by levitating in the skies on a hot air balloon! Don’t bother trying hoping to visit the dinky French village from which Fogg and Passepartout make their balloon ascent – it’s simply a studio set on the Universal Studios backlot.
